My Experience As An Intern - Drew Walters

Drew Walters

When I first joined PrecisionLender, I didn’t know what to expect. Part of that, I’m sure, was because it was my first professional role after graduating from college. The other part was that the company was already challenging the preconceived ideas I had about working in an office environment.

While other companies I interviewed with glossed over the responsibilities of the role and spoke at length about the perks of working for them (a basketball court, free snacks, a casual dress code) my conversations with PrecisionLender from the very beginning were focused on my skills, my aspirations, and how those fit with the company’s needs. Perks are great, but what mattered to me was finding a place to learn and grow as a professional and, more importantly, as a person.

At the time, I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what was behind that difference. I now understand that it was a sense of purpose; this company and its employees are purpose-driven, and that mentality guides every interaction they have and every decision they make. Yes, I get to dress casually every day, but that’s not why I’m here.

They’ve challenged the traditional concept of an internship. From day one, I have actively worked with multiple teams on a variety of projects from market research and video editing to contact sourcing and analytics reporting. I’ve had the freedom to pick projects that not only help the company, but interest me as well. I even have a number of recurring responsibilities, including managing our Google Analytics account and editing our weekly podcast.

Just as important as the work are the people. Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. Not once have I felt as though I couldn’t or shouldn’t ask a question or share my opinion, and that is a powerful thing. It has allowed me to grow more comfortable and confident in my abilities every day.

Ultimately, my time at PrecisionLender has taught me what to look for in a work environment once I move on. One of our values is to “Create an environment where people are authentic.” Surrounded by great people and empowered to pursue my passions, I can be myself, and that’s when I’m at my best. This company cares deeply about the professional and personal success of its employees, and it has been a privilege experience that first hand every day. This internship was everything I had hoped for and more, and I know that the skills and connections I’ve gained will be invaluable in my career moving forward.
